The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, including its Office for Civil Rights (OCR) and the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), recently announced newly enacted revisions to the regulations governing the Confidentiality of Substance Use Disorder (SUD) Patient Records at 42 CFR part 2 (HIPPA Part 2). These changes are intended to safeguard the privacy of patients undergoing SUD treatment.
This final rule enhances collaboration among providers caring for individuals with SUDs, reinforces confidentiality safeguards, and promotes the seamless integration of behavioral health data with other medical records, ultimately with the goal of enhancing patient health outcomes.
